Installing Adobe Acrobat.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free download from Adobe. It allows you to read files written in Adobe Acrobat format, which have the file type ".pdf". Unfortunately, the download is 8.6MB, so may take some time to download. An alternative is to use one of the free discs on the front of computer magazines (e.g. P.C. World, P.C. Pro etc.), which usually contain a copy of Acrobat Reader.

Acrobat format files are very useful since they will print out to any printer from any P.C. or Mac, and will look the same. They also are very small, compared to files written in Microsoft Word, and so take less time to download.

If you decide to perform the download, read these instructions, and then click on the Adobe link at the bottom of the page.

1. The first page you should see on the Adobe site should have a column in the centre beginning with "downloads". Move your mouse over "downloads", and a further column should appear to the right.

2. Click on "Free Acrobat Reader". This should take you to another page on the Adobe site.

3. Scroll down the page to the bottom, and click on "Get Acrobat Reader free", which should take you to another page.

4. Scroll down this page to find three boxes, with drop-down list boxes in them.

5. In the first box, select the language and operating system you are using, then click on "Download" in the third box.

6. A "File Download" box should appear. Click on "Save to disc" and "OK".

7. You will be asked for a folder to save the file in. Create one, or save it in any existing folder.

8. The download will begin and ---------30 MINUTES LATER---- END. (56K modem)

9. If this has succeeded, you should now have a file saved in the folder you chose, so drop the internet link and let the phone line cool down.

10. Double click on the file, and it should install itself. Answer yes or next to all sensible questions, and it should put the reader in your program files folder. You should now be able to use the reader to read the archive files (and many others).
