Cromwell Hall was built on this site in 1894 to promulgate Protestant Christian teaching. Thomas Hope Aston, a fervent teacher and lecturer, led this work until his death in 1909. From that date until its closure in 1992, Cromwell Hall became a place for teaching local children the Bible and in addition, a thriving centre for a wide variety of youth and family activities. These included membership of Guides, Scouts, Brownies and participation in musical, sporting and theatrical events. Over 4000 young people benefited from the guidance and inspiration they received from Cromwell Hall.
